Mahatma Gandhi famously said: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” However, when we dig a little deeper, we can discover what sat behind this well-known quote is equally as powerful:
“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
What does this mean to me as a Leader in simple, practical terms? When adopting this mind-set, it avoids us judging others, it replaces complaining about others (or our circumstances/environment etc.) with reflection on self and also stirs us into taking action within the only thing in the world over which we have any control: ourselves.
A fundamental principle that therefore underpins the entire ethos and philosophy of our Leadership Programme is that each Leader is in control of being the ‘best version of themselves’ and therefore all aspects of the programme are structured around this. Firstly, by truly ‘holding up the mirror’ to understand yourself in terms of who and where are you today versus where and who you want to be – we facilitate, support and guide you on that journey throughout. Only then and once you are on your journey to be in your best place possible, are you equipped to tackle the world around you and whatever it throws your way.
So, whilst life changes are inevitable, when we initiate and implement personal transformational change, so too can we rise to the challenge and become a stronger and more impactful role model in all aspects of our life and lead transformation in any circumstances, context, environment both now and in the future (whatever that may hold!)
